They explained the important connection between attacks abroad by the government of Canada with increased troop deployment for the occupation of Afghanistan and attacks on working people at home, as in the recent BC teachers strike.

Vancouver Mobilizes Over 900 People in Protest Against the Occupations of Iraq & Afghanistan and for Self-Determination for All Oppressed Nations!
September 24th 2005 saw hundreds of thousands of people across the globe come to the streets to echo the demands of the Iraqi people for an end to war and occupation. Over 900 people joined Vancouver’s antiwar coalition, Mobilization Against War and Occupation (MAWO) to demand: “US/UK OUT OF IRAQ! CANADA OUT OF AFGHANISTAN!”

In the midst of the mercury rising in the Canadian war drive and the remaining but high heat of the summer in Vancouver, people in Vancouver are mobilizing to protest war and occupation of the “Canadian” variety. On Saturday August 27, over 250 people rallied downtown Vancouver at the Art Gallery to protest the Canadian military’s increased involvement in the occupation of Afghanistan and also the continued US/UK occupation of Iraq. This rally followed 3 consecutive pickets at the Canadian Armed Forces recruitment center, targeting the increased Canadian troop deployment to Afghanistan.

On July 14th 2005 Canadian General Rick Hillier announced that Canadian troops deployed to Afghanistan will target “detestable murderers and scumbags” as part of their job, which – he clarified – is to “kill people.” Nestled in his racist rhetoric was the announcement that by February of 2006, two thousand more Canadian troops will be killing people in Afghanistan.

Protest & Picket Line
On Thursday July 21 over 40 people turned out to the Canadian Armed Forces Recruitment Center downtown Vancouver to picket, protest and raise their voices against the Canadian war drive. The picket began at 3pm with MAWO organizers joined by students, other young people and people of color who unfurled a banner reading "Canada Out of Afghanistan!" in front of the recruitment center.

On Saturday July 16, Mobilization Against War & Occupation (MAWO) organized a successful protest rally to demand an immediate withdrawal of Canada's troops from Afghanistan. The rally on Saturday drew over 200 people and was an urgent response to the July 14th announcement by Canada's Chief of Defense, Gen. Rick Hillier, that Canada would be deploying 2,000 more troops to occupied Afghanistan.

It was a wet a dreary day on March 20th, 2005, one day
after hundreds of people had taken to the streets of
Vancouver in protest of the 2nd anniversary of the war
on Iraq. Despite the weather, however, Mobilization
Against War and Occupation (MAWO) was still in action.
At a conference entitled: “The 21st Century: The Century
of War, Occupation and Resistance. Building the Antiwar
Movement, Why there is no other option” over 80 people
came to discuss the current state of war and occupation
and our tasks and perspectives for effective resistance...
